Community Gardens
Since its inception in 2008, NOLA Green Roots has advanced its mission by building several community gardens in blighted areas of New Orleans.  We have improved access to fresh healthy food and provided NOLA Green Roots members with cost savings. Delivered door to door, our members have received in their baskets more than 500 dozen eggs, 200 pounds of potatoes, 100 pounds of cucumbers, 100 pounds of blood oranges and more!

Membership Program
Our membership program is designed to promote resident involvement. Under the supervision of NOLA Green Roots staff, members participate in the daily maintenance of the garden one hour per week. In exchange, along with a small membership fee, members enjoy fresh produce delivered to their door bimonthly. There are several membership plans to choose from including one specifically designed for Seniors.

Compost Program
In order to generate revenue to advance our mission, NOLA Green Roots operates a composting center.  Garden members are encouraged to compost at home and we’ve partnered with more than 20 restaurants throughout the City. NGR compost bins are placed at these restaurants where we pick up and weigh the waste weekly.  NGR demonstrates energy conservation and sustainability in all of our programs.

Classes & Workshops
Classes and workshops are offered and designed to teach residents how to grow food with a focus on sustainable gardens.  Members and residents learn planting and seeding and how to build raised beds that utilize natural irrigation methods. They especially enjoy attending workshops on composting and raising chickens.  We also offer an number of workshops designed specifically for children ages 4 – 12.

Cooking Demonstrations
Not only do we teach residents how to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, but we also teach them how to incorporate this fresh produce into their favorite meals.  Cooking Demos are held on our cooking deck at Wise Words Community Garden. There, residents learn how to become better chefs!
